“China has a quite mature vaccine development in the manufacturing industry. It has a lot of vaccines in development. It has a lot of manufacturing capacity to provide vaccine supply that is needed in low-income developing countries.”

Melanie Saville, Chief Scientific Officer of PATH recently has conducted an exclusive interview with SFC reporter, indicating that China has got the infrastructure, science, and technology to be quite a key player in the global health space.

During the interivew, Saville also revealed PATH's work in China now which is focused on promoting the development of the local vaccine and diagnostic industry, helping Chinese manufacturers comply with international laws and regulations, and produce related products in China at a lower cost.

After the experience of COVID-19, many governments and international organizations have set the goal as inventing a new vaccine in 100 days, when the next pandemic comes. “The 100-day mission is a really important ambitious goal,” Saville added that the way to achieve it is to do the R&D upfront now, not wait for the emergency.
