Companies in the GBA | Tech Unicorns Flock South: Why Guangdong Became the Robotics Mecca?

2025-04-14 14:46:37 21世纪经济报道 21财经APP 黄欣然,白宇航,李莹亮

In Shenzhen’s robotics ecosystem,

Ordering a robot means connecting with

Local sensor suppliers within an hour,

Precision engineering factories in Dongguan,

Motor component suppliers in Zhuhai,

And livestream e-commerce distributors in Guangzhou.

Once assembled,

These robots can immediately deploy in Guangzhou factories,

Serve at Foshan tourist attractions,

Or assist at Hong Kong airports.

This demonstrates the explosive potential of Guangdong’s humanoid robotics industry!

For humanoid robots,

2025 is what 2015 was to electric vehicles.

The “humanoid robotics race” has evolved from concept slides to real-world workshops,

With tech leaders unanimously declaring that these machines will become

As ubiquitous as smartphones and cars.

“Robotics will be the next trillion-dollar industry.”

Now,

This evolution of “steel bodies” is gaining Eastern momentum.

2025 marks the first time “Embodied AI” appears in China’s Government Work Report,

With Shenzhen and the Guangdong provincial government

Establishing funds worth tens of billions of yuan to turbocharge robotics development.

A Morgan Stanley report reveals that

China leads in humanoid robotics production globally,

commanding 63%

Of the global supply chain.

By 2050,

China’s humanoid robotics market is projected to reach 6 trillion yuan.

Of the world’s top 100 public robotics companies,

70% are Chinese or American,

With 36 Chinese firms making the cut.

While the U.S. leads in robotic "brains"

( AI chips and software development),

China dominates the “body” (full machine integration),

With superior hardware manufacturing and cost efficiency,

Excelling in components like actuators and harmonic reducers.

Within China,

Clear regional specialization and industrial clustering exist.

The Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) regions collectively host the vast majority of enterprises.

Beijing-based companies specialize in developing the "brains,"

Yangtze River Delta firms excel at crafting the "body," and

The Pearl River Delta leads in system integration,

Resulting in complete humanoid production.

Among Guangdong’s 11 listed companies,

Six focus on system integration,

Accounting for half of China's top integrators.

Guangdong’s dominance stems from

Its complete manufacturing ecosystem and abundant application scenarios.

China holds 38% of global embodied AI supply chains,

With the Greater Bay Area commanding 55% of the national share.

Guangdong is naturally suited for full-machine production.

For example,

With 60% of automotive parts applicable in robotics,

Automakers like XPeng, GAC, and BYD have already moved ahead of the pack.

Once integrated, these humanoid robots can then work in auto factories

Handling non-standard assembly tasks.

XPeng’s IRON robots are already deployed in factories,

Featuring proprietary “dexterous hand” technology for precision tasks.

GAC’s GoMate is also capable of shifting between 2/4-wheel modes

For security and elderly care applications.

Ubtech’s Walker S even operates in BYD/BAIC plants.

This ecosystem

Has attracted star players

Like Unitree, Astribot, and CloudMinds,

To establish Guangdong operations.

He Xiaopeng once predicted:

“Beyond today's ‘Seven Robotics Swordsmen,’

We’ll see 70 emerge in 2-3 years.”

As mass production begins,

Your future “colleagues”

Might already be self-testing on Guangzhou or Shenzhen assembly lines.

Soon, we might greet them with

“Hello world, let's work well together!”
